Not an Oscar but a ‘Voscur’ for Home-Start Bristol!
People at family support charity Home-Start Bristol were jumping for joy this week. They won a public vote and were chosen for the ‘Happy, Healthy Bristol’ award presented by Voscur, the organisation supporting voluntary work in Bristol, at their Annual Celebration on Thursday.
Home-Start recruits and trains parents and grandparents so that they can befriend struggling families with young children. Jenny Harris, who has done voluntary work for Home-Start Bristol for the last twelve years, nominated the charity. She said,
‘I have seen from the inside what an impact this charity has on the health and happiness of the parents who no longer feel alone, the children who are excited about the volunteer’s visit each week – and the volunteers themselves. It is so rewarding to be able to make a difference for people who are going through hard times.’
Beverley Symonds, Home-Start Bristol Scheme Manager, was at the ceremony to receive the award. She said ‘We owe our success as a scheme to our volunteers – this award is recognition of the time and commitment they give to help others.’
Home-Start Bristol’s other great news this week is that 18 new volunteers have just started their training. This means that there will soon be more than 90 experienced parents ready to go out and help families in and around Bristol to feel happier and healthier. That’s really something to celebrate!
